From its founding until July 2011, I was a staff writer for St. George News, an online news source serving the city of St. George and Washington County in southwest Utah. I previously wrote for the Desert Valley Times (Mesquite, Nevada), Mesquite Local News (Mesquite, Nevada) and Viewpoints (student newspaper of Riverside Community college; Riverside, California). After joining the Viewpoints staff in the fall semester of 2003, my editors and advisers were so impressed with my copy editing skills, keen eye for detail, and knowledge of AP Style that they created the role of Lead Copy Editor just for me and hired me on as a paid employee. I received Viewpoints' "Best Feature Story" award in the spring semester of 2005 for my story about Fantasia, Riverside Community College's winterguard, taking 1st place at Winter Guard International championships. In October 2010 I was honored with a "Best Feature Story" award by St. George News, for my feature "Sundance Hopeful Filmed in St. George." My story "Ivins Man Camps Out in Front of Chase Bank After Receiving Counterfeit Bill" spread to The Consumerist and Reddit mere days after its appearance on the website of St. George News. As of this writing, it is the most-read story in St. George News history and has over 12,000 hits. |
